History

The first World Athletics Championships were held in Helsinki, Finland in 1976. The Championships were originally known as the IAAF World Cup in Athletics and were held every four years until 1991.

In 1991, the IAAF World Cup in Athletics was renamed the World Athletics Championships and began to be held every two years. The Championships have been held in a different city each year since 1997.
